Ten Class AA Boys Individuals to Watch Out For in 2018

Isaac Basten, Buffalo, Sr

Isaac Basten of Buffalo High School has made a name for himself in the distance running community with his determination and winning mindset. Those close to him can often hear him before big races saying "I'm tired of being bad." In all seriousness, Basten has been anything but bad. In the last two years on the track Basten has won every single open 800m and 1600m race he's been in, and nine of his 13 3200m races. Perhaps his most impressive individual race on the track this year was one of the few races he didn't win, where he broke 9:20 for the first time at the Hamline Elite Meet and placed 4th. He later anchored his 4x800m team to a State Championship in June. On grass Basten has had similar successes. He placed 11th at the 2017 State Meet, and came back a week later to run a 20-second personal best at NXR, good for a top-50 finish in the region. Basten will inevitably be winning many trophies, plaques, and medals this season, but he will definitely be most envious of the individual State Cross Country title.
