Ten Class AA Boys Individuals to Watch Out For in 2018

Jake Derouin, Eden Prairie, Jr

Despite balancing both running and swimming, Jake Derouin was a dominant underclassman for Eden Prairie who seemingly came out of nowhere in the fall. He placed 17th and grabbed the last individual qualifying bid out of Section 6AA to barely qualify for the State Meet. Derouin then nearly placed better at State than he did at sections, finishing in 21st and grabbing All-State honors. He was the second fastest underclassman in the race behind Nick Scheller, and his time was 1:17 faster than his freshman year PR. In the spring, he barely missed qualifying for State  out of Section 6AA in both the 1600m and 3200m, as he placed third and fourth respectively. Impressively, he dropped 30 seconds off his first two mile of the year to end up with a season best of 9:20.73, and dropped 13 seconds off his first mile of the year for a 4:21.97 personal record. Running alongside fellow junior Mohamed Mohamud, Derouin should be in striking distance for a top-five finish this fall.
