Class AA Boys

Sprints

100m Top Seeds: Sam Valor (Monticello) - 10.71, Gary Afram (Rosemount) - 10.75, Nolan Morical (Alexandria) - 10.80
100m Fastest Season Bests: Valor - 10.71, Afram - 10.75, Morical 10.80
100m Returners: Godsword Simon (Saint Paul Highland Park)
The Skinny: In the 100m dash, Godsword Simon is the only returner from the 2019 state meet. He is running in the Section 1 Heat with a qualifying time of 11.18 which is far off from Sam Valor's top-seeded time of 10.71, but Simon does have a season-best time of 10.84. It's a deep field that has 11 qualifying times under 11.00, and 13 runners overall with season-best times of 11.00 or faster. Rosemount's Gary Afram has to be considered the favorite after a dominant season where he has only lost a 100m race once. He is also the owner of four of the top six times in Class AA this season.

200m Top Seeds: Julian Tong (St. Paul Central) - 21.50, Landen Liu (Centennial) - 21.55, Michael Haugo (Moorhead) - 21.82
200m Fastest Season Bests: Tong - 21.50, Liu - 21.55, Sawyer Seidl (Hill-Murray) - 21.79
200m Returners: None
The Skinny: This year's 200m field is headed up by Julian Tong and Landen Liu, who have posted a couple of top 20 all-time marks in Minnesota with 21.50 and 21.55 respectively. There are no returners in this race from the 2019 state meet, so who wins is anyone's guess. Eight of the nine guys in the final heat qualified with a time of 22.00 or better.

400m Top Seeds: Ramy Ayoub (Farmington) - 48.57, Gus Langford (DeLaSalle) - 49.17, Mitchell Piehl (Hutchinson) - 49.27
400m Fastest Season Bests: Ayoub - 48.13, Langford - 48.88, Piehl - 49.27
400m Returners: Thomas Rosengren (2019 4th Place), Brett Ringer (2019 6th Place)
The Skinny: The 400m field is dominated by three standout runners in Farmington's Ramy Ayoub, DeLaSalles Gus Langford, and Hutchinsons Mitchell Piehl. Those three runners are the only 400m runners to run a sub-50-second 400 in Class AA. Ayoub has to be considered the favorite as he is the only one of the bunch to qualify with sub-49-second 400m this season. He has run 48.xx three times this season, and Gus Langford has run a 48 second 400m when he ran a 48.88.

Hurdles

110H Top Seeds: George Jackson (Hopkins) - 14.21, Samuel Duffing (Hopkins) - 14.85, Sam May (Willmar) - 14.90
110H Fastest Season Bests: Jackson - 14.04, Duffing - 14.71, May - 14.90
110H Returners: Jackson (2019 3rd Place)
The Skinny: Leading Class AA all-season long in the 110m hurdles has been Hopkins George Jackson. Jackson has the top 4 times this season in the event, with only Sam Duffing even coming close to his times. Jackson has hovered around 14.21 this season for the event but has a season PR of 14.04 which is 7th all-time in Minnesota. Duffing has a season PR of 14.71 and would have to improve drastically or hope Jackson stumbles for a chance for the win. Five runners overall qualified under 15 seconds.

300H Top Seeds: Jack Kocher (Lakeville North) - 39.02, Samuel Duffing (Hopkins) - 39.50, Ryan Gregory (Owatonna) - 39.79
300H Fastest Season Bests: George Jackson (Hopkins) -38.40,  Kocher - 39.02, Duffing - 39.13
300H Returners: None
The Skinny: A three-runner race has emerged in the 300m hurdles with Hopkins Sam Duffing, Lakeville Norths Jack Kocher, and Owatonnas Ryan Gregory emerging as the favorites in the race. Those three hurdlers are the only qualified individuals with a season-best time under 40 seconds in the event. Kocher is the only returner from the 2019 state meet where he finished 16th in the prelims as a freshman.

Distance

800m Top Seeds: Ramy Ayoub (Farmington) - 1:53.42, Bryce Stachewicz (Lakeville North) - 1:54.26, Alexander Gutierrez (Eden Prairie) - 1:56.40
800m Fastest Season Bests: Ayoub - 1:52.54, Gabe Smit (Prior Lake) - 1:53.39, Stachewicz - 1:54.03
800m Returners: Stachewicz (2019 7th place)
The Skinny: Two competitors distanced themselves from the competition during sections, Ramy Ayoub and Bryce Stachewicz. They were the only two boys to run under 1:56 at sections to qualify for state with times of 1:53.42 and 1:54.26. Not to be overlooked in this race though are William Skelly and Alexander Gutierrez. Skelly has consistently been one of the top 800m runners all year and has run 1:56.xx or better five times this season. Gutierrez is hitting his stride at the right time and has posted new PRs in the 800m during his last two races at the Lake Conference meet and Section 6AA championships.

1600m Top Seeds: Benjamin Scheller (Chanhassen) - 4:17.41, Isaac Hartman (Eden Prairie) - 4:21.64, Andrew Johnson (Mankato East) - 4:23.22
1600m Fastest Season Bests: Gabe Smit (Prior Lake) - 4:12.44, Aiden Kilibarda (Stillwater) - 4:15.35, Scheller - 4:15.43
1600m Returners: Smit (2019 9th place), Elliott McArthur (2019 14th place)
The Skinny: The 1600m has a loaded field with seven runners that have run under 4:20 this season. Only one runner has gone under 4:15 though, and that is the top 1600m returner from the 2019 state meet, Gabe Smit. Smit has a season PR of 4:12.44, which is almost 3 seconds faster than anyone else in Class AA this season. The only other returner, Elliott McArthur, has run a converted 4:10.42 (4:11.88 mile) from the indoor season and is always a runner to watch. Some other names to watch include, Aiden Kilibarda, Ben Scheller, and Isaac Hartman

3200m Top Seeds: Isaac Hartman (Eden Prairie) - 9:24.25, Sam Scott (Minneapolis Southwest) - 9:28.38, Evan Myran (Moorhead) - 9:31.30
3200m Fastest Season Bests: Elliott McArthur (Mounds View) - 9:20.46, Gabe Smit (Prior Lake) - 9:21.45, Hartman - 9:24.25
3200m Returners: Daniel Vanacker (2019 15th Place)
The Skinny: Another deep field, and a race with no clear-cut runner who is a head above the rest. The only returner from the 2019 race is Daniel Vanacker who qualified with the second-slowest time in the field. The top times in the state this season 9:20.46 from Elliott McArthur, 9:21.45 from Gabe Smit, and 9:24.25 from Isaac Hartman. Another runner to watch is standout freshman Sam Scott who has a personal best time of 9:28.38.

Relays

4x800m Top Seeds: Wayzata - 8:02.48, Edina - 8:02.54, Bemidji - 8:02.56
4x800m Fastest Season Bests: Wayzata - 8:02.48, Edina - 8:02.54, Bemidji - 8:02.56
The Skinny: The 4x800m relay looks to be a three-team race between Edina, Wayzata, and Bemidji who have all run under 8:03. They are the only three relays under 8:06 this season. This looks to be a much slower relay than the 2019 state meet where ten teams ran under 8:02.

4x400m Top Seeds: Farmington - 3:32.73, Mounds View - 3:24.17, Lakeville North - 3:24.27
4x400m Fastest Season Bests: Farmington - 3:23.73, Mounds View - 3:24.17, Lakeville North - 3:24.27
The Skinny: Always one of the most exciting races on the track, the 4x400m relay looks like it won't disappoint. The qualifiers are led by a 3:23.73 from the Farmington boys, with Lakeville North and Mounds View just behind them. The final heats qualifiers all are within a few seconds of Farmington, so it should come down to the line.

4x200m Top Seeds: Hill-Murray - 1:28.48, Hopkins - 1:28.72, Saint Peter - 1:28.99
4x200m Fastest Season Bests: Hill-Murray - 1:28.48, Hopkins - 1:28.72, St. Peter - 1:28.99
The Skinny: All the qualifying times in the 4x200m from sections were between 1:28.48 and 1:33.49. All those relays are now spread between two heats, and as we all know, it's anyone's race to win. This race is really wide open, with no clear-cut favorite.

4x100m Top Seeds: Hill-Murray - 42.30, Champlin Park - 42.69, Dassel-Cokato - 42.87
4x100m Fastest Season Bests: Hill-Murray - 42.29, Champlin Park - 42.56, Dassel-Cokato - 42.87
The Skinny: It's much of the same in the 4x100m as the 4x200m relay, where all the teams are closely bunched together. All teams qualified between 42.30 and 44.12 seconds, so there is no clear-cut favorite.

Jumps

High Jump Top Seeds: Jacob Ziebarth (Cambridge-Isanti) - 6'8", Levi Yeebahn (Anoka) - 6'5", Cole Matetich (Bemidji) - 6'5"
High Jump Season Bests: Ziebarth - 6'8", Luke Oberleitner (Saint Francis) - 6'7", Caleb Tussey (Stillwater) - 6'6.5"
High Jump Returners: Levi Yeebahn (2019 11th Place)
The Skinny: In the high jump Jacob Ziebarth seems to be the man to beat with a personal best jump of 6' 8", but Luke Oberleitner has been the more consistent jumper with a personal best of 6' 7". Ziebarth has only jumped 6' 4" or better twice, compared to four times for Oberleitner.

Long Jump Top Seeds: Justin Gleason (Owatonna) - 22' 9.25", Matt Seberson (Waseca) - 22' 3", Edmund Ocansey (Champlin Park) - 22' 2.5"
Long Jump Season Bests: Gleason - 22' 9.25", George Jackson (Hopkins) - 22' 7", Seberson - 22' 3"
Long Jump Returners: Edmund Ocansey (2019 6th place),
The Skinny: Since George Jackson isn't competing in the long jump, Owatonnas Justin Gleason is the man to beat. Gleason has the season's best jump of 22' 9.25" from the Section 1AA meet last week, which is 6.25" better than his nearest competitor in Matt Seberson. Keep an eye out for Edinas Will Hanson, who has been the most consistent long jumper in the state this season, with all his marks being between 21' 5.75" and 21' 11.5".

Triple Jump Top Seeds: Ryan McDowell (Stillwater) - 44' 4.5", George Nyanforth (Moorhead) - 44' 1", Edmund Ocansey (Champlin Park) - 43' 11"
Triple Jump Season Bests: Nyanforth - 45' 3",
Ian Lilliquist (New Prague) - 45' 0", Abagotte Opiew (Worthington) - 44' 8"
Returners: Ocansey (2019 2nd Place), Nyanforth (2019 9th Place)
The Skinny: The triple jump field is deep with the top qualifiers, and those who have posted the best jumps in the state this season, and with only four jumps, it's anyone's guess as to who might come out on top. Ocansey is probably considered the favorite as he finished 2nd at the 2019 state meet and has shown consistency in his jump this year ranging from the high 43' foot range to low 44'.

Pole Vault Top Seeds: Travis Reighard (Waconia) - 14' 7", Jack Helmich (Wayzata) - 14' 7", JT Zell (Hopkins) 14' 4"
Pole Vault Season Bests: Helmich - 15' 0",
Ethan Hintermeister (Cambridge-Isanti) - 14' 8", Reighard - 14' 7"
Returners: Hintermeister (2019 7th Place)
The Skinny:  The pole vault seems to be a three-vaulter race, with a chance for some upsets. Of the top ten vaults in Class AA this season, Helmich owns four of them, Hintermeister owns three (two of the top three vaults), and Reighard has two. It would seem that one of those guys would win, but Zell and
Cody Krohnberg aren't too far behind either.

Throws

Discus Top Seeds: Marcus Hansen (Waseca) - 170' 8", Hayden Bills (Rosemount) - 169' 8", Maxwell Hammons (Osseo) - 155' 10"
Discus Season Bests: Hansen - 178" 0", Bills - 169' 8", Tyler Nebelung (Anoka) - 159' 2"
Returners: Hansen (2019 3rd Place)
The Skinny: The race for the discus state title, appears to be a tow-thrower race between Rosemount's Hayden Bills and Wasecas Marcus Hansen. Hansen and Bills, as shown above, have by far the two longest discus throws in Class AA this season. They have combined for the top thirteen throws in their class this season, and are the only two throwers over 160 feet. Hansen is the only thrower over 170 feet in Class AA and the only returner from the 2019 state meet.

Shot Put Top Seeds: Marcus Hansen (Waseca) - 62' 7.5", Alexander Jensen (Fergus Falls) - 54' 7", Dylan Gross (Brainerd) - 53' 4"
Shot Put Season Bests: Hansen - 62' 7.5", Weston Ebner (Rosemount) - 55' 1.5", Jensen - 54' 7.75"
Returners: Hansen (2019 5th Place)
The Skinny: One of the only events in the state where a state title seems like it has a clear front runner and no chance of that front runner losing. Hansen has dominated the shot put, to the tune of the eleven best throws in Class AA this season. He is the only thrower over 56 feet, and every one of his best throws this season, but one has been over that mark.

Wheelchair

In the wheelchair races, we have a few competitors spread across the 100m, 200m, 800m, and shot put. Duluth Denfelds Blake Eaton is the man to beat in the 100m, 200m, and 800m. Eaton is the defending state champ in the 100m, and 200m. He will look to improve in his PR of 20.47 in 100m and 35.70 in 200m. He will be challenged by Buffalos Macario Palomares. Eaton is the only competitor in the 800m.

In the shot put, Palomares, will be looking to challenge to Class AA state meet record of 18' 6.5". Paolomares comes into the meet with a qualifying throw of 17' 11.25".
